Son is pretty sensitive to his privacy and I do respect that, but at the same time, he's careless in leaving things such has his Facebook page wide open for me, his mother or the dog (if she could read) to  skim through.

So, sometime last week, he left the PC and disappeared for a while without logging off from Facebook.  Saw he'd been chatting for a while with a girl who he met during the summer camp in Ohio.   I've seen this person in the flesh; she and her mother checked in for the camp immediately after we did, and from first impression and her subsequent profile pics on Facebook, I'm thankful a bit of distance e separates the 2. 

The impression I had/ still have is that of a flake. The girl's hair is dyed day-glo yellow, she uses very heavy eyeliner (to the point that she could be mistaken for having eye-black on) - reminds me of Cindy Lauper back in the day.  She appears interested in Anime, which I guess is the hook for her being at that camp.

There was another time, when he left his yearbook out, and flipping through it, saw a Korean girl in his Japanese class had left him a message of 'Hey give me a call over the summer' (she included phone number).  Son did ask her (again he left his 'stuff' up on the PC for anyone to look at) to come to one of the pro lacrosse games he was working at, but got I think the old 'Sorry, but I've got to wash my hair tonight'.  And again when he's left his Facebook page open, I've seen this Korean kid with a different profile pic, she clinging on to a different white dude in each one.

So I wonder about what son looks for in what he sees as attractive women.

A Japanese woman?  A resounding 'hell no' I think on that one.  Had a conversation in the car a few weeks ago and I was curious as he's had 3 different Japanese language instructors, 2 Japanese  women and one, his current instructor, an American man, as to who among them he's been the most comfortable with.  He said he liked his current instructor and when I asked why not either of the Japanese women, he said that all Japanese women can do is "scream and bitch at him".

Dumbest criminals caught out

THEY may have broken the law but these offenders could never be called criminal masterminds.

Queensland Police have told The Courier-Mail about catching some of 2009's dumbest criminals.

June 11

A police officer noticed a vehicle following him while he drove around Clermont, 280km southwest of Mackay, about 11.45pm. The car followed the police vehicle into the police station's yard and the driver got out to discuss a relationship problem. The man appeared drunk and when tested blew a blood-alcohol reading of 0.26. The 35-year-old man was charged with drink-driving, fined $1800 and disqualified from driving for 16 months.

June 19

A teenager was seen leaving the Harvey Norman store at Warwick, 80km south of Toowoomba, with two video games he had not paid for. Police went to the store to speak with the informant and get a description of the suspect. Instead, they were handed a very useful document. A staffer recalled the thief had visited the store earlier to seek employment and had given them his curriculum vitae. Police went to the address listed on the CV and charged the teenager with shoplifting.

August 18

A woman went to Cecil Plains police on the Darling Downs to report her mobile phone had been stolen the night before. She had left it on her dining room table when a 34-year-old man known to her visited. When he left, she realised her phone was missing. When police visited the man's address, he denied knowing anything about the missing phone. Police then rang the number and heard the woman's phone ringing in the man's bedroom. He gave the phone to police and was given a notice to appear in the Dalby Magistrates Court .

November 5

Two men who allegedly robbed a hotel at Gladstone, 100km southeast of Rockhampton, at knife point did so without the benefit of a getaway car. They were forced to hitchhike away from the scene and were about 30km from Rockhampton when they used a $50 note as bait to flag down a silver Toyota sedan. The vehicle pulled over and the men got in only to find they had been picked up by two plainclothes detectives. One man and one juvenile were charged with robbery while armed and will appear for sentencing on April 1.

This afternoon, I finally have settled in to read Tales from a Travelling Mum: Navigating Europe with a Babe-in-Arms by my pal, AliceGriffin. I've been following Alice's adventures for a while now through her blog. It is a delightful read written by a delightful person. Great for armchair travelers, families with a dream and those actually starting their planning:)

Also, remember that amaryllis I saved? Look how it has grown and not only that, a twin shoot grew from the same bulb alongside it and now is ready to burst into bloom also!

It's not a very bad cold. In fact it's one of the milder illnesses I can remember... My sinuses are about 40% stuffed up. My throat is just vaguely scratchy. I'm more tired and achey than usual, but not by much. Nonetheless I am taking the cue and lounging on my couch for the 2nd day in a row, swaddled in blankets, books, and handkerchiefs.

Sometimes when I'm sick I will do a juice & tea fast for the day - to keep myself hydrated and let my body concentrate on killing the virus, rather than digesting complicated foods. So today I've had emergen-c, water, yerba mate, and vegetable juice. And I really must not be all that sick, because I am STARVING. I think I will get some extra-spicy thai food for dinner.

And then perhaps I will watch the Dr. Who xmas special AGAIN! I can't believe it's the 2nd-to-last episode starring David Tennant.

I got a copy of The Talented Miss Highsmith for xmas (Patricia Highsmith's new biography). It's sort of fascinating, especially considering that the author seems to hold a certain amount of (justified) disdain for Highsmith. Apparently she was a racist and anti-Semite. Her personal life was chaotic, despite her solipsistic tendencies (it is even referred to on the inner flap as a "Pandora's Box"). She was an obsessive list-maker and left behind 8,000 pages of journals when she died. Her life is a rich territory. Still, this bio is a bit cumbersome... Mostly I'm interested in reading about writers' writing habits.

Being sick is dull. More tea!

Had a short conversation that brings back to mind a joke a now deceased aunt told me once.

 I am loosely, very loosely actually, connected to a local Lions Club chapter here and today was lot cleanup after their annual Christmas tree sale.    Now a neighbor  also belongs, and he and his now in med school son came late, didn't bring tools of their own for disassembly, were constantly 'borrowing' mine, and then at the end, wanted to know why son had not come with me (he had come at the beginning of the tree sale to off load the trees).

Told both of them son was at home finalizing the remainder of his college applications.  Was ribbed that son was probably 'smoking me', and that is not a problem.  But then this neighbor turns to his son and asks, as if it had any bearing on anything, what schools he did not end up applying to. And his son, rattled out that oh, he did not follow up on his application  to Harvard,  but did follow up on his application to John Hopkins.

 

And now the joke goes like this.

 

Two old friends met after many years of not seeing one another.   The one woman stated on about how she now lives in a huge house, now owns much jewelry, has a handsome husband, etc. etc., etc.  To which the other woman simply replies to each  with a 'Marvelous'.

Now this puzzles the woman especially as many years ago, the other woman was apt to use fairly coarse language. And this woman noted that in the old days... Well the other woman replied that she had decided to improve herself and had gone to a finishing school.

One things she had learned while there she said was whenever she wanted to say bulls**t, to just say 'Marvelous'.

 

So guess what I thought as I was listening to these neighbors go on.  :-)

Boxing Day sales start. I'm not much of a shopper but I have a Lululemon certificate that I am hoping to stretch to twice it's size today:) I also want to pick up an armband for my new nano.

I am also hoping to try out a new lens I got for my camera:)) Better get out there!
